cheshire county council

cheshire council host their own sustainable energy website with links, support and ideas to make an imapct in school.
http://www.cheshire.gov.uk/ecoschools/
extract from front page

The Cheshire Eco Schools website provides a starting point for schools wishing to consider environmental issues. The information below has been prepared to support schools in taking forward practical environmental projects. Many schools already include "environment" within their curriculum activities through science, Citizenship and PSHCE. For such schools, the guide provides an up to date summary of further projects and contacts. For those schools that have yet to give a clear focus on environmental issues, the guide provides a good starting point for both teachers and pupils. If you are a pupil looking for ideas, we hope you will find something of interest in the following web pages. If you don’t please email us or phone 01244 603191 and we will try and do our best to answer your questions

OFSTED

OFSTED doc PDF

There are seven key concepts of ESD (p22 from link, above)

This document contains information on
- Raising the profile of ESD
Some ideas include: photo albums of work, prominent displays, parental contact, dedicated days, or weeks, pupils are empowered through a council..
Examples of where it has been successful:
“pupils were appalled to realize that the firm (catering) were prolific in creating waste in the form of plastic and foil containers”
- reports of vandalism decreased as pupils feel responsible for the environment
- through science pupils realized that energy was being wasted , it was raised as a whole school issue and a campaign was started to reduce energy consumption
- each class room has ‘energy notes’ and eco monitors to check lights are off and doors are closed
- each class has a recycling paper bin, managed by pupils
- paper drawer, where the 2nd side can be used rather than recycling
- various gardens set up around the school growing herbs and vegetables
that are used in the kitchen
